Educational Activity
・Classes Taught
In “Environmental Resource Management Policy”, basic subjects and methods of global environmental policy in order to build a sustainable society can be learned. Particularly, theories and practices of participatory and collaborative policy-making, and PES (Payment for Ecosystem Services), can be learned through case studies at global level. In “Global Forest Conservation Policy”, international historical processes of how forest environmental management evolved to more ecosystem-based one through the conflicts can be learned. Also, theory and practice of participation, collaboration, ecosystem-based approach, forest conservation problems in and out of Japan, and complex global forest conservation problems including biodiversity conservation and mitigation of climate change can be learned through case studies. These two courses are also offered in Japanese. Also, for undergraduate level students’ course: “Introduction of Global Environmental Studies”, A lecture titled “Introduction of Global Environmental Policy -A system to paying for Environment: PES (Payment for Environmental Services” is offered.
・Seminar
Seminars are separately conducted in English and Japanese, but facilitate their interaction to foster global capabilities and unconventional way of thinking. Conduct shared readings/introduction of papers and provide presentation opportunities for discussions based on students’ needs and research priorities. Provide opportunities for field visits such as “Sophia Forest” and forest volunteer activities, and attendances of various research workshops. This enables students to learn theory and practice in a balanced manner.
・Sophia Forest
In 2017, MOU was exchanged with a District National Forest Office to allocate 5.53 ha of Asamayama National Forest to promote field educational activities. The area is named as “Sophia Forest”, and field studies have been conducted one or two times per year ever since. In 2019, a leaflet was also prepared. Major educational activities include: forest mensuration (carbon volume), vegetation survey, wildlife survey, trail construction, etc. In April, 2020, MOU was renewed to expand the area to 21.98 ha.
